Outdoor fire pit tables are usually considered pieces of decor that are used to accentuate the outdoor living area in addition to providing warmth. However, when it comes to providing warmth, there are many outdoor propane fire pit tables that are not capable of single-handedly providing sufficient heat to keep you warm (unless you’re sitting really close) on normal evenings let alone a those very cold chilly evenings. Because of this, some of these outdoor propane fire pit tables are first, outdoor decor accessories and heat sources second. Usually, the best fire pits for heat are wood burning fire pits. Don’t worry though if you’re in the market for an outdoor propane fire pit or propane gas fire pit table for heat. There are some good options available.

If you want to buy a propane gas fire pit or propane gas fire pit table for the primary reason of providing heat, then you must be or get familiar with the term fire pit burner BTU rating. The initials BTU stand for British Thermal Units which in our case basically means the unit that measures the heat generated by a fire pit burner or the heat value of fire pit fuels such propane, natural gas, ethanol, wood and etcetera.

Usually, fire pits and fire pit tables with the highest BTU rating are supposed to generate the most heat. So the higher the BTU rating of a fire pit, the more the heat generated, supposedly. I say ‘supposedly’ because higher BTU rating does not 100% guarantee you more heat. This is because heat generated also depends on the functional design of your fire pit and factors such as gas pressure, orifice size and burner size that also affect the heat produced in relation to the BTU rating in your gas fire pit. You can read more on this factors here.

It’s really difficult to tell if a fire pit will deliver heat as promised unless you first test it. But if what you want is heat in a fire table first and foremost, it’s always recommended to go for higher BTU fire pits and fire pit tables because the risks are the same. Better the ones with higher BTU rating because with them there is a chance you will get what you want after-all.

So, for the best gas fire pit tables for heat, I would recommend going for a fire pit table with a rating of at least 60,000 BTUs.

However, to stay warm during the winter, the best option is to go for a wood burning fire pit or have a combination of a gas fire pit and a heater.

Below is a list of propane gas fire pit tables that have a burner rating of 90,000 BTUs. Frankly, the highest I’ve seen in the market for propane gas fire pit tables. You can also check these other cheaper priced fire pit tables with a rating of 60,000 BTUs and above. If you’re looking for an ordinary portable propane fire pit, then this list might help narrow your search.

  1. I have purchased a couple of fire tables over the years and didn’t realize the variety that they came in. To tell you the truth, i am not even sure what the BTU rating of my fire table is? Is there a way to find this out? Also, is there a rule of thumb for what BTU output I should be looking for dependent on how cold the ambient temperature is that I would be looking to enjoy outside? The other thing I noticed, after reading your post; was that some of these fire tables come with a locking cover. I sure wish I had invested in that (or even known about it) when I bought mine. I worry about water damage when it rains and this would help relieve some of that anxiety.

    1. Hello Todd,

You can check the BTU rating of your fire table in the user manual if you still have it. Some manufacturers will have it there. If not you could look it up in the web by searching for the manufacturer.

As for the BTU rating that you should be looking for depending on the temperatures, there really isn’t any rule of the thumb. Though, I will tell you that as I mentioned in the post, 60,000 BTU fire pits and above are better suited to provide more heat. If heat is not your first priority, or you plan to use your fire pit table with say, a heater then a 40,0000-50,000 BTU should do for additional warmth.

Sorry to hear you invested in a fire table that didn’t have a locking cover for the burner. Most I’ve seen this days do come with one. In my opinion, this is a must-have and you shouldn’t buy a fire table table that doesn’t come with a locking cover. There are plenty of great options with lid covers to choose from so stay away from those. There are however, some lid covers, like this one, available for purchase separately in some sizes so you could try and see if you’re get one that will fit your burner. Also try searching for ‘Lazy Susan’ for fire pits and see what comes up. The only problem is that even if you get one that fits your fire table burner, it probably won’t match the table top design of your fire table but at least, you wont have to worry about rain damaging your burner.

  2. Wow those fire tables are really beautiful! I am planning on getting rid of my 15 year old above ground swimming pool and putting in a patio. After looking at your post, I think I will look into getting one of the fire tables. I never saw one that looked that classy!
How do they hold up? I live in the northeast so we get cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

    1. Helo Dave,

Yes they are a classy no doubt! These gas fire pit tables have a BTU rating of 90,000 BTUs so I think they are quite capable of generating quite some heat to keep you comfortable during normal COLD evenings. However during the winter, now that’s another matter because quite frankly, even with a BTU rating of 90,000 I can’t quite guarantee that they will be able to generate the needed heat to keep you comfortable.

What I can tell you is that a 90,000 BTU PROPANE fire pit is one of the highest in the market, so they’re likely among the best for generating heat. If you’re looking to keep warm during the winter, you may as well take a risk and go for any of the above fire tables, or look into incorporating your fire pit with a heater.
